2020 NEWSLETTER

Anna Esenther

Message from Steven Haider, Chair of the Department of Economics

MSU Economics and the Pandemic

Welcome to our 2020 newsletter! Suffice it to say, it has been an incredibly challenging year for everyone in the Department of Economics community. Let me start on a positive note. Over the last eight months, I have been continually amazed by the resilience, hard work, and generosity of the entire community. Undergraduate students are showing up for online courses, even when they are during the middle of their night. Graduate students are applying themselves to the isolating endeavor of completing a dissertation, even in the midst of a very isolating outside world. Faculty members are adapting to online teaching, even offering seminars to help other faculty adapt. Advisors are adapting to new university rules and guidelines, again and again and again. And our office staff simply does what it takes to keep everything running behind the scenes. I very much believe we have earned the tagline “Spartans Will” over the last few months.

For MSU economics, as for almost every organization and institution in the US, the most important story of the year has been the COVID pandemic. For that reason, we are devoting a significant fraction of this year’s newsletter to stories of how the pandemic has affected MSU economics, and how we have worked to address the challenges associated with the pandemic.

MSU’s AEA Summer Program Team Meets the Challenge of Remote Delivery

In 2015, the Department of Economics was chosen to host the American Economic Association’s Summer Training Program (AEASP), a prestigious program established over 40 years ago with the goal of increasing the diversity of the economics profession. This summer was scheduled to be the fifth and final year of MSU’s hosting cycle. It was apparent by late spring, however, that if the AEASP was to occur at all, it would have to be done remotely.
